EVALI is an acronym derived from E-cigarette or Vaping product use-Associated Lung Injury — a condition referring to lung damage caused by vaping harmful substances through e-cigarettes.

The term was introduced to define a newly identified lung disease resulting from the use of toxic or illegal substances, including drug-laced or contaminated vaping liquids. The U.S. government agency CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) conducted extensive research following a wave of EVALI cases across the United States. The findings confirmed that 48 out of 51 samples taken from affected patients’ lungs contained THC and vitamin E acetate. Currently, due to the crackdown on illegal distribution of contaminated e-liquids, the number of EVALI cases in the U.S. has dropped sharply.
